Monoprint of a cluster of birthday candles burning with vivid flames on a black background, by Lorie Hamermesh
Into the Fire, 2026
Watercolor, dry point, 23 x 18 inches

Artist Statement

I am interested in the tension between vulnerability without protection: how strength emerges without armor, and truth arises without fear.

My life advances like the candles on a cake. Each flame marks a year, a loss, and a continuation. The fire does not fade with time, but intensifies to reveal passion and contradiction. Is the face reflected back in the mirror a nostalgic memory, an inhibited mask, or the authentic self?

I came of age in the 60s with rock and roll as the soundtrack of my life — a pulse that still fuels me. My titles don’t define meaning but imbue it with raw rebellious energy, charged with eros.

My work is not about innocence, but clarity — an affirming resilience forged by the acceptance of self, loss, and the power of longevity.
